The Peach Tree Inn has been in business for more than 50 years. It was built in the 1930s by Mr. Wacker, who named it after the peach tree that still sits in the front yard. At one time, it was a family home and served as hostelry to travelers passing through Fredericksburg on their way westward to California or Oregon during those times.
It is now owned by Charles and Gayle King, who are proud of the history of their bed and breakfast but also want to keep up with modern times by renovating some rooms while keeping its historic feel intact!
During that time it has changed hands three times.
The Peach Tree Inn is a historical landmark, with many stories and legends associated with it.
The original owner was William Wacker, who bought the property in 1855. He owned and operated the inn for about ten years before selling it to his son-in-law, Jim Lankford. Mr Lankford then operated the inn until 1976 when he sold to Mr Deitz who renamed it Peach Tree Inn Restaurant & Bar. Mr Deitz owned it for approximately 10 years before selling again in 1985 to his daughter Paula who still owns and operates today as “Peach Tree Inns” Inc., operating as one of Fredericksburg’s finest restaurants since 1985!

You may not know that Herbert Deitz was the owner of The Peach Tree Inn from 1955 to 1965. Mr. Deitz was from New York and a businessman, but he moved to Fredericksburg in the early 1950s and purchased two historic buildings that are now part of our complex: The Crown Jewel Building (then called Mansion House) and an adjacent building that is now known as Carriage House. He renovated both structures into upscale apartment homes and opened them up for residential rentals.
In 1955, he bought The Peach Tree Inn property and moved it across Highway 16 out of town onto what used to be known as Boonesboro Road where it still sits today as one of Fredericksburg’s oldest buildings. At this point in time, there were already three buildings on the property: The original log cabin built by Captain William Jones in 1817; a stone house built around 1850 by John Scott; and finally another log cabin built by John Scott around 1849.
In the mid 60’s, he sold the Peach Tree to his son-in-law, Mr. Lankford, who operated it until 2004.

In 2010 another great Fredericksburg tradition was born when Eric and Sharon Kirkland bought and began operating “The Village House”, a bed & breakfast next door to our inn.
In 2016 we expanded our property once again with an addition of 4 suites in what was formerly known as “The Lankford House” across from our main building on Main Street in Fredericksburg Texas!
At this point, the property was purchased by current owners, Jean and Patrick Dwyer who have invested their hearts and souls into bringing it up to its full glory.
At this point, the property was purchased by current owners Jean and Patrick Dwyer who have invested their hearts and souls into bringing it up to its full glory. The Dwyers have worked hard over the last 15 years, investing not only in improvements but also in their own connection with both the community and history of Fredericksburg. The couple’s passion for the inn is obvious from their dedication to keeping its history alive—from hosting events such as Civil War reenactments on site to providing tours of the mansion that include stories about local plantations.
The Peach Tree Inn has long been an important part of both Fredericksburg’s past and present. As you enjoy your stay at this historic hotel in Texas Hill Country, remember that you are experiencing not just a room or a meal but a slice of history too!
There have been many people involved in making Peach Tree Inn what it is today
Peach Tree Inn has a long and colorful history. It was built in 1852 by Samuel Townsend, who left it to his son William upon his death in 1864. In turn, William gave it to his daughter when he died in 1883. She then sold it to John Hays two years later, but unfortunately Mr. Hays did not live long enough to enjoy the inn himself: he passed away just two months after buying Peach Tree Inn from Miss Townsend.
The next owner was Charles Fennell; he owned Peach Tree Inn until 1916 when Mrs. Mary Jepson bought it from him with her husband Frank Badger Jepson as co-owner (after their marriage). The couple lived there until 1919 when they decided that they wanted something more modern than an old-fashioned log cabin home had to offer them – so they sold Peach Tree Inn for $6,000 dollars!
Conclusion
We appreciate all of the hard work that has gone into the inn. The Peach Tree Inn is a special place and we are honored to be part of its history. We look forward to welcoming you as our guest at this special place in Texas Hill Country!
