I have had some great successes with Ferry Morse’s seed products and I thought I would share a little about how to plant packet seeds. It seems that our climate is changing, especially where I live in upstate NY. It hardly ever freezes but when it does, it is dramatic. Both of these factors cause a huge problem for most of my seed starting mix for the garden: cold and direct sun.

How to Plant Ferry Morse Seeds

Plant Ferry Morse seeds in the spring, when the soil temperature is 50 degrees F or higher. Plant them in a sunny location with good drainage, and plant at least 6 inches deep so that they can grow into an upright position.

Ferry Morse seeds should be planted every 8 to 12 inches apart from each other in rows spaced 10 to 12 inches apart. The closer together they are planted, the bushier they will grow; however, if you want taller plants with longer stalks than those grown closer together, plant them farther apart.

• Spacing. How far apart should you plant your seeds? You can find this information on the back of most seed packets. It’s usually written at the top of the label and looks something like “space plants 10 inches apart” or “plant 1 foot apart” (in which case you would count every foot as an inch).
• Depth of planting. Most crops should be planted at least 1/4 inch deep; some require deeper planting depths than others do. The instructions on most seed packets will let you know how deep to plant them—but if yours does not give instructions, consider going online and researching how deep to bury each variety of Ferry Morse Vegetable Seeds

Spacing

Spacing refers to the distance between plants. Plants are usually spaced based on how big they grow and what you want to achieve from the garden. For example, if you’re planting tomatoes, you want them close together so that their leaves shade each other and keep the ground cool. But if you’re growing corn, it needs room to grow tall and wide; so with that in mind, it should be planted at least 18 inches apart from each other (or more) so they have room to grow properly.

Depth of Planting

When planting seeds, it’s important to know how deep they should be planted. The depth of the seed depends on whether you’re planting into the soil or in containers.

Planting seeds in pots

The ideal depth of planting for seeds in pots is 1/4″ (0.64cm) below the surface of the soil. If you are using a potting mix with a large particle size, such as coco coir or perlite, then use 1/2″ (1.27cm). If your potting mix has smaller particles such as vermiculite or peat moss, then plant your seeds at 3/8″ (1 cm) below their surface.

To plant:

• Fill your seed tray with soil and water it until the excess water runs out of the bottom of the tray (this is called “dampening”).
• Sprinkle some seeds on top of this dampened soil, then cover them with another thin layer of soil so that they’re barely covered at all (this is called “sowing”). Alternatively, if you’re using a potting mix instead of soil, use half a cup for each seedling pot and follow these instructions for sowing seeds into it carefully!

Days to Germination and Maturity

Days to germination is the number of days it takes for a seed to sprout and begin its first stage of growth: germination. The germination process is different based on the type of seed, but generally speaking, it involves a seed breaking down its hard outer protective coating and growing into an embryo that sends down roots in search of water or nutrients. Once these roots have found something to grow into (such as soil), they will begin absorbing water and nutrients until they can sustain themselves independently by photosynthesizing.

Days To Maturity refers to the time between planting your seeds and harvesting them when they are fully grown.

Planting Times and Planting Dates

There are two ways to figure out the best time to plant ferry morse seeds:

• Determine your growing zone. The USDA has a tool on its website that will give you an idea of what temperature range is normal for your area, and therefore when you can safely plant ferry morse seeds. For example, if your growing zone is USDA 7a (the coldest), it means that temperatures below 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-17 Celsius) are normal in winter.
