Pre-emergent fertilizer
Pre-emergent fertilizer is a common product designed to prevent weeds from growing in your lawn. It’s applied before the seedlings come up and sprout.
When applying pre-emergent fertilizer, follow these steps:
- Apply the product around early spring or late winter, when temperatures are mild (45 degrees F or below). The ideal time for application is in February or March, but keep in mind that this will vary depending on where you live.
- Mix the product with water according to manufacturer’s directions and spread it over your entire lawn area using a push spreader at approximately 200 pounds per acre. Make sure you wear safety goggles and rubber gloves while working with this product!
Granular lawn fertilizer
There are a few things you should know about centipede grass before you begin feeding it. First, it does not grow well in areas with poor drainage or with poor soil quality. Secondly, centipede grass has shallow roots and is susceptible to wind damage. Because of these facts, fertilizers should be applied sparingly so as not to disturb the delicate root system of this plant.
A slow release fertilizer such as granular lawn fertilizer is ideal for centipede grass because it provides nutrients over a period of time rather than all at once. This will help prevent burning and avoid damage from high levels of nitrogen that can occur when using quick-acting fertilizers such as liquid or water-soluble varieties.
Liquid lawn fertilizer
Liquid lawn fertilizer is easy to apply, use and measure. Liquid fertilizer comes in concentrated form, so you only have to mix small amounts with water. This makes it easier to store and use than dry granular fertilizer that requires mixing with large amounts of water.
Centipede grass requires very little fertilizer, but when feeding is necessary, it’s best to use a low-nitrogen product with a slow release and to water well after application.
Centipede grass is a slow-growing grass that requires very little fertilizer. When you do need to fertilize your centipede lawn, however, opt for products with low nitrogen content and a delayed release.
The best time to fertilize centipede turfgrass is in the spring and fall. You should only apply fertilizer if you have exhausted all other options such as watering or aerating. When applying fertilizer, always apply it to the soil and never directly on top of the leaves because they can burn from too much phosphorus (typically found in chemical lawn treatments). Follow recommended dosage rates on product packaging carefully.[2]
Conclusion
So, when you choose a product to fertilize your centipede grass, be sure to use a fertilizer that is low in nitrogen. You should also avoid fertilizing when the temperatures are warm and instead do so during the cooler months of spring or fall. If you follow these tips, then you can ensure that your grass will remain healthy and happy.
