Join author Michele Vig, the founder of Neat Little Nest, on an interactive journey to learn how to clean out and organize the key areas of your life! Declutter your home, calendar, and mind to find real, lasting change.
Our lives are busier than ever before, leaving us burned out…and leaving our homes cluttered. The Holistic Guide to Decluttering shows how three core components—physical, time, and mental clutter—are intricately linked and how focusing on one area alone is not likely to bring the peace our souls desire. Including step-by-step tutorials, reflection tools, and worksheets, this book gives practical ways to learn the “how to” of holistically decluttering and organizing so you can begin to feel the freedom that comes from organizing:
You’ll explore your attachment to things and are given practical ways to successfully go about decluttering and organizing your home. Find inspiration through success stories and beautiful photos showcasing how organizational systems can both simplify and offer a daily delight.
Learn (or re-learn!) how precious and finite time is. Although it is fleeting, you will be empowered to start owning your time. You will learn ways to make positive changes to help plan, prioritize, and make the most of your hours, days, weeks, months, and years.
Above all else, the mind is the most powerful force for an organized life. Only by decluttering your mind can you begin to grow and create lasting change.
By bringing these components together, you will see how decluttering can reach far beyond a simple closet cleaning. If you take the proper steps to clear your clutter with intention, you can find a deeper emotional release and sustainable transformation.

The Holistic Guide to Decluttering
Three Dimensions of Clutter
There are three primary dimensions of clutter—physical, time, and mental.
Physical clutter is the clutter you can see in your home, car, and workspace. Time clutter is the clutter that happens on your calendar—being overscheduled and not planning ahead or reflecting back. Mental clutter is the clutter in your mind—the rushing thoughts, the mental to-do list, the never-ending noise in the mind.
My belief is that these three dimensions are intricately linked. Having them all cluttered up at the same time feels chaotic.
Consider all of the decluttering you’ve done up to this point in your life. How much of it was focused on physical clutter compared to time clutter and mental clutter? I would guess you haven’t really considered time clutter and mental clutter too much.
I’m here to suggest that time clutter and mental clutter might be at the root of your clutter challenge. Tackle physical clutter without considering the impact of the other two types of clutter on you and your life and you might find your decluttering regimes and organizing systems won’t stick.
There are many positive things that can come from digging into the three dimensions of clutter, but the best thing that can happen is that through the process, you will learn more about yourself and begin to grow and change in ways you might never have imagined.

How to Set an Intention
There are many different ways to set an intention. For this exercise, you will follow three steps:
1) Find a quiet space
Find a quiet space where you know you will be uninterrupted for thirty minutes or more. Carve out enough time to give yourself the space you will need to listen to your inner voice.
2) Listen to your heart
As you sit in your quiet space, imagine your highest desire for your life. Imagine yourself already living that life and realigning what it feels like to be there. Reflect on the questions below to dig deeper into your vision.
Where are you and what does the space around you look like?
How does the space around you feel?
What is happening around you?
What are you doing?
How do you feel?
Who are you sharing time with?
What have you let go of?
3) Set your intention
As you sit and reflect on each question, write down your answer when you feel your heart and mind are in agreement. Give yourself enough time to reflect on each question, but don’t overthink it. There are no wrong answers. Then complete the Intention Statement in the book.

Establishing Home Organization Routines
Adults, much like children, function better when their lives are centered around routines. When you set routines, you are able to complete repetitive activities without exerting as much mental energy because completing tasks in the same order repeatedly builds brain power and mental muscle, allowing your brain to work less for the same result. And who doesn’t want that?
Routines can also help you feel comfortable in a fast-paced, complex world. Having a familiar flow to your day can save you time, can make you more efficient, and can help get you firing on all cylinders. While each day is different because the tasks, action items, and events may vary, having a routine provides a solid framework and a sensible sequence.
Most importantly, routines help you keep your home organized.
Having kids routinely put their toys away beginning at a small age will help build life skills they can draw upon in the future.

Mental Clutter: Rushing Mind
Ever had a morning where it seemed as if the seconds on the clock were clicking along faster than normal? I think we’ve all had that feeling where for every one step we take forward, we feel like we’re also taking two steps back. You might be trying to focus on the task at hand like getting dressed and getting your hair brushed, but then a thought comes into your mind and distracts you. You begin thinking about something your kids need for school or that you need for work, so you rush to grab that item, leaving the bathroom without finishing what you started. Then you head back to finish getting dressed, and another thought comes into your mind about an important project at work, so you decide to quickly check your email. Several minutes later, you realize that way more time has passed than you thought and now you’re going to be late. Since now your mind is thinking about being late, you begin rushing even more.
