Introduction

My grandparents were chicken farmers who didn’t have a lot of extra time or money. They were no different than most of their generation; everything they did had to be economical, practical, and efficient. They didn’t throw away things that broke or rusted. Instead, they fixed what they had or repurposed it. When I was young, my grandfather regularly made trips to the town dump—and I was thrilled when I could join him!

Feeding your chickens

It’s important to feed your chickens high-quality food for a healthy and balanced diet. After all, chickens expend plenty of energy on their own, then expend more energy and use additional nutrients laying their eggs. Any reputable feed company likely offers a complete line of feed, from chick starter to layer, but mixing your own feed isn’t difficult—as long as you have a good recipe that offers the balance of nutrients a flock needs.

In the coop

The chicken coop provides a safe, comfortable spot in which your chickens can lay their eggs and sleep at night. Whether you build your own coop, buy one fully assembled or as a kit, or convert a garden shed or playhouse into a coop, there are lots of opportunities for some handy upgrades that will make your life and your chickens’ lives easier and more comfy.

The run

From swings to outdoor perches to creative ways to offer treats to your chickens, the run offers lots of opportunities to create a veritable playground for your flock. The more you give them to do, the less you’ll have to worry about pecking and other potential issues that can occur when chickens get bored. If you can’t free-range because you’re not home all day or there’s a threat of predators, then some run upgrades are a must.

Raising chicks on the cheap

Many of us have heard an urban legend about a kid who hatched chicken eggs in a cardboard box under a desk lamp. However, I have to say that trying to build your own incubator probably isn’t the best idea! So much can go wrong if the temperature or humidity isn’t spot-on, so it’s prudent to spend some money on a good-quality product that ensures the best hatch rate possible.

Chicken health

Keeping your chickens healthy can be challenging, but many natural preventives and remedies have worked for me over the years. Since we eat our chickens’ eggs, I don’t really feel comfortable treating my chickens with commercial synthetic chemicals and medications (which sometimes dictate a period of time during which you shouldn’t eat the eggs that chicken lays).

Hacks for your home

The chicken coop and run aren’t the only areas where repurposing what you have comes in handy. There are also many ways to bring chicken-related projects and hacks into your home. Eggshells, egg cartons, and even eggs themselves can be turned into all kinds of things you can use around your home—candles, fire starters, and common beauty products. I’ll show you some of my favorites.

In the garden

Gardening and chicken keeping naturally complement each other. If you do one without the other, you’re missing out on the synergy that results from using some of the natural byproducts of chicken keeping in your garden. I also believe in having your chickens help out in the garden with some natural pest and weed control.
