THE PROPAGATOR’S TOOL KIT

Good tools make an enormous difference to the ease with which you’ll be able to propagate your plants. They can also make the difference between failure and success. So your first task as a plant propagator is to collect the tools you’ll need for the jobs you’ll be doing.

STARTING FROM SEED

Seeds are true wonders. Inside the seed coat, a tiny plant, complete with its radical, or first root; stem; and cotyledons, or seed leaves, lies ready to take in water and begin growing.

As you’ll see on the following pages, your job as a propagator is to provide the appropriate amounts of water, light, and oxygen at the correct temperatures to stimulate this tiny plant to burst through its seed coat and begin its new life.

DIVIDING ESTABLISHED PLANTS

Dividing established plants is one of the easiest of all propagation techniques. It is also one of the safest—whenever you can choose between division and a more risky propagation technique, choose to divide. As long as you pay attention to a few basic techniques and guidelines, you’ll never lose a plant or have a propagation failure as a result of dividing it.

CUTTINGS

Taking cuttings and stimulating them to root can be a simple, straightforward way to propagate your plants. In the case of tender, tropical houseplants and many woody vines and shrubs, it’s frequently the recommended method. Not only does it give the surest results, it also ensures that the new plant will be identical to the parent. However, to achieve success, you do have to follow some commonsense guidelines.

LAYERING

Layering is one of the easiest ways to propagate plants. The stems of many plants naturally form roots when they are in contact with the soil, and this method takes advantage of that characteristic. With some plants, you have to wound the stem to stimulate rooting, and you often have to bury or surround the stem with soil or a moist rooting medium, but that’s all there is to it—the plant does the rest of the work.

GRAFTING

Grafting is one of the most exciting things you can do in the garden. Once you master it, you can create such things as an apple tree that contains two cultivars that pollinate each other, a mixed-cultivar tree that produces a variety of fruits in a small space, and specialty roses that grow on a trustworthy rootstock.
