Tiny Plants: Discover the joys of growing and collecting itty-bitty houseplants

The Botany of Tiny Plants
There is something magical and otherworldly about truly tiny plants. Often overlooked in natural habitats, tiny plant species, once discovered, reveal entirely new natural worlds and ecosystems. Botanical fascination aside, tiny plants are pretty darn cute, and that is what can make them so irresistible to plant collectors.
Collecting and Caring for Tiny Plants
Collecting and growing tiny plants is an intimate affair. You may discover the way you interact with and care for your tiniest plants feels a bit more personal than it does with larger houseplants. While I tend to have a survival-of-the-fittest approach with my big houseplants—unless, of course, it happens to be a rare or expensive specimen—I tend to dote daily over my tiny plant companions. They are just more precious to me.
Tiny Windowsill Plants
Tiny Windowsill Plants thrive in normal home humidity and temperature levels. While some species may appreciate a bit of misting now and then, especially if your house is very dry, you can place these petite plants anywhere in your home where light levels are appropriate for the species. Tiny windowsill plants are also good choices for an office environment where artificial light is available, and they fit perfectly tucked into a corner on a desk.
Tiny Plants Under Glass
Many tiny plants, especially epiphytes, need higher relative humidity or wetter root zones than a typical open home environment provides. If you love high-humidity plants but simply cannot manage indoor humidity needs for large tropicals, then tiny plants are the way to go.
Contain Your Tiny Plants

One of my Haworthia angustifolia specimens growing in a tiny 1½-inch (4 cm) terracotta pot is about to bloom!
Peperomia prostrata is small enough to grow in one of my tiny 1½ inch (4 cm) handmade glazed ceramic pots.
Unsealed clay pots with drainage holes (these range in size from 1 to 3 inches [2.5 to 8 cm] wide) are conducive to air movement.
To reduce water loss from porous clay pots, use a pot sealer followed by a primer and paint of your choice.

A Note from The Author, Leslie F. Halleck
I hope you have discovered some exciting new tiny plants and are inspired to grow big collections . . . in tiny spaces! Once you begin your tiny plant journey, I am sure you will discover many more wonderful, itty-bitty houseplants to fill your home, and heart.
