My Story with the Hummingbird

Although my strength is insignificant, I will try my best to provide it with a healthy and friendly feeding environment.

When I was young, I lived in a poor family where was 5 km far away from my school. Every time I had to walk a long rugged ghaut to school. Trees around are densely packed and suffocating. At that time I was 6, most of kids were picked up by their parents except me. Sometimes I would complain why my parents couldn’t do that. Especially when evening came, you couldn’t image how it got into deathly stillness, attacking you with freezing malice.

She was a tiny hummingbird with a clear and melodious voice, like a bolt of lightning, shattering the darkness before dawn. Its petite body glided over my head, then flew back, landing gently on the branch, and stared at me as if to signal me that it was safe to walk ahead. Every time I was on the way home, she would appear in time. Since then I wasn’t afraid of the night as I know she is always waiting for me.

That time was my happiest time in elementary school. Later, my parents took me to other cities. Before I left, I ran back to look for her but I didn’t see her any more, which becomes my eternal regret! Maybe she already knows what I’m going to tell her or she doesn’t want to see me sad. Now I have grown up, and I have my own family and children. I will also pick up my kids every day perhaps out of a kind of insignificant nostalgia for her.

Once I took a rest at home and turned on the TV with interest. I happened to see a live report of the hummingbird feeding environment. It shown like this : a thin hummingbird is drinking water on the steps where is full of footprints. the water is a bit dirty, it should have been left after the heavy rain, but hummingbird still drinks regardless of the danger around it. After seeing this, I was deep in thought and felt unspeakable.

Usually I am keen on public welfare activities of bird protection and bird livings on various platforms. I spent more than 2 years to study hummingbirds, hoping to find solutions to improve on their feeding habits.
