THE VALUE OF BULBS

Bulbs are easy, colourful, diverse and beautiful garden plants. Whether you have a large country garden or a window box, there will be a bulb that you can grow. Although best known for their spring flowers, there are bulbs for every month of the year, from the depths of winter to the height of summer. When you plant a bulb in autumn it can be flowering in three or four months, while a bulb planted in late summer can be flowering in just a few weeks. What easier and quicker way is there to transform your garden?

Plants

Autumn snowflake

The delicate, white bells of the autumn snowflake are held on thin stems only a few centimetres above the ground. Waving in the breeze, a good clump of these flowers brings a magical touch to the autumn garden.

Sicilian honey garlic

Sicilian honey garlic is now included in Allium but bulbs are mostly sold as Nectaroscordum. The bell-shaped flowers hang down as they open, held in a loose umbel at the top of the tall stem; each one is pink with a green base. As the seed pods develop, the flowers point back upwards again.

Belladonna lily

Sugar-pink trumpets appear in early autumn, before the leaves. Several blooms of this South African species can open at the top of the tall, upright stem and, when sheltered from the wind, a group of belladonna lilies can create a beautiful display.

Planting Tender Bulbs in a Pot

1

The bulbs of amaryllis are large and often have roots growing out of the base when you buy them.

2

Plant each bulb so its roots and base are covered in soil mix, but the rest of the bulb is exposed. Keep the soil moist.

3

Once the shoot begins to develop, make sure the bulb is in good light. The shoot will grow towards the light so you should keep turning the pot to keep it straight.

4

Eventually, the fat buds will open to reveal huge, trumpet-like blooms. The open flowers can make the plant top-heavy so use some wire supports to help keep it upright.
